We are very proud to support a local charity, Birthday Wishes. I first read about Birthday Wishes in the Boston Globe, not only is this an amazing-original idea, but Lisa Vasiloff really had the foresight to structure the charity in a way to make it thrive. If I remember correctly, the idea came from a need, where many of the best ideas come from. Lisa and a friend wanted to get their kids involved in some type of volunteer or charity program. But when she searched for something that would be fun, interactive and rewarding, there was little or nothing available for kids, tweens and teenagers. Then a friend of hers was volunteering at a local shelter serving lunch. A young child got their lunch and told Lisa’s friend that it was his birthday. Like all of us would do, she wished him a “happy birthday” and without really processing the situation, said what are you going to do? ” The child said something like “well, nothing”. I remember reading this in the Boston Globe, my heart ached. This child’s response and the situation was the seed that started this program. Lisa did research and found that many of the kids living in shelters rarely if ever, get a birthday present, cake or anything. Some of the family’s don’t tell the kids that it is their birthday because it’s simply too hard and emotional.
Lisa started with one local shelter. Now she has sponsors like Hasbro, iParty and Whole Foods and is serving 185 shelters in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York. Please check out the website, www.birthdaywishes.org .
